A Luncheon in Solidarity with the People of Haiti2 years since an earthquake devastated Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince and some of its surrounding cities.
On January 12, 2010 a 7.0 magnitude quake hit Haiti, a country that had already been hit by 4 consecutive hurricanes the previous year. This monster quake devastated the country, killing approximately 300,000 people, leaving more than 500,000 badly hurt and close to 2 million homeless or displaced, according to government figures. After the devastating earthquake, Haiti Lumiere de Demain (HLD) became the organization the local population on the island of La Gonave turned to for help.
Despite the organization's meager means, HLD was able to help meet some of the immediate needs of the people. In the midst of the debris, chaos and chattered hearts, HLD has been a steady and reliable partner with the people of Haiti, providing thousands of children access to education and a safe and clean place to go to for personal academic enrichment.
The purpose of this Solidarity Lunch with the people of Haiti is to strategize with donors and supporters like you to help move Haiti from perpetual relief to long term self-sufficiency. There is no doubt in our mind that self-sufficiency begins with educating the children and training them to better manage and protect the environment. In the rebuilding of Haiti, small local organizations like HLD that knows the local communities can make the difference that transforms Haiti into a beacon of hope and opportunity for its children for the long term.
